ENG | Long ago, the Val d’Inferno above Ornica was known as Val Fornasicchio, due to the presence of furnaces that processed iron ore extracted from local mines. According to a local legend, the largest furnace was run by cruel outsiders who, when short on firewood, would throw passing villagers from Ornica into the flames.
To end these atrocities, three men from Ornica traveled to Venice and returned with firearms. They built a small fort facing the furnace and waited. When the oppressors came back, they were met with a hail of fire that destroyed them and their furnace. The furnace disappeared without a trace, but the valley has been known ever since as the Val d’Inferno.
